Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara – Magazine Freebie!
This is the latest addition to the Hypnose family of mascaras from Lancome. For a long time I shelled out money for the original Hypnose – then I stopped….I thought why am I spending so much on mascara when there are good drugstore ones out there for much less money?!
I saw that Tatler magazine (something I never usually buy!) Was giving away a sample size of this new mascara so I thought I would give it a try.
I love that one of my favourite cartoon characters, Betty Boop is all over the marketing materials for the Hypnose range of shadows and mascara! She is adorable. Sorry that this pic is not the best quality:
Summary:
Sold at all Lancome counters
£4.20 with a magazine – for a 2.5 ml sample
Full size is £22.00 for 6.5ml
Unique shaped bristle brush – 2 sided shape
Gives great volume and length
Prone to clumping
3/5 from me!
Review:
First off the sample size is not bad, its 2.5ml. Its perfect to take away on a trip and save a little room in your makeup bag. Its also 1/3 of the size of the full size one, then paying £4.20 for the magazine is quite good!
Although its small, importantly the brush is the same size as on the full size one. It is an odd shape and kind of two sided. You are meant to apply with the flat side and the use the wide side to brush up and through the length of your lashes. I haven’t used a brush like this before and I thought….um interesting.
I do like that is a bristle brush and not latex, they seem to pack more punch but sometimes are plagued with a downside – they can make your lashes clumpy.
This mascara is a very dark black – I like that! I think it only comes in one shade but I could be mistaken.
The scent is normal for a Lancome mascara, its there but its not offensive.
This mascara does a great job of both lengthening and volumising but here is the downfall – it makes my lashes look a bit clumpy despite me being careful with application and combing between the two coats I apply. I have had clumpier lashes with other mascaras but this is a pain to use….fine if you have time on your hands but when you need to get a move on in the mornings and get out of the door.
Here are a couple of pics of me with the mascara on – see its a little clumpy no? But I think you will agree the mascara is intense and its added lots of length and volume. It also curled up lashes up a bit….I applied 2 coats:
This in typical Hypnose form did not flake or smudge so big thumbs up there.
Its also easy to remove unlike something like BeneFit They’re Real mascara!
Here are the ingredients:
Bottom line: I am glad I didn’t shell out for the full size of this. Yes it does what it claims but its too much hassle to apply, comb, apply, comb etc. For that reason I am giving it 3/5!
I will use the rest of the sample up, but then I am going back to my regular False Lash Effect mascara from Max Factor – half the price of this and half the effort!
If you want to try this out I suggest getting Tatler this month. The magazine might not be your cup of tea (its not mine!) But for £4.20 you can see if you like the mascara.
Are you a fan of this? What is your favourite mascara at the moment? What mascaras do you not like and why? Get in touch and let me know!

Hello Grace !! Loved the review of this mascara. My all time favorite mascara is the Chanel Inimitable intense, however because of the price i don’t buy it very often so my usual “go-to” mascara is Maybelline Great Lash mascara. I often flip back and forth and use different ones but always go back to Great Lash. Thanks for your blog, you post some very useful information !! xoxo from the U.S.

Hi Belinda!
Thanks so much for your comment. I like that Chanel mascara too but its expensive! I can understand why you don’t buy it that often. High end mascaras are so expensive and given you have to throw it away after 3 months, its not worth it!
Thanks a lot – glad you found the review helpful!

I bought this and I’m also not sure about the double sided brush… the first time I used it this morning I just used the rounded side and didn’t bother with the flat side; it confused me! Will try it properly though and see how it works!x

Hi Beauty Bird
Thanks for your comment – do try it the other way with the brush and let me know how you get on with it. I would like to know if it ends up clumping a litte on you too or if its just me!
