Silk Pillowcases…..your skin & hair wants you to use one….for life!

100-Silk-Pillowcases

We can all spend loads on various skin care products and hair products to look our best and prevent aging – but there is something super simple we can do which will assist and literally do the work for us while we sleep!

For many centuries now, especially in the far east it has been known that using silk pillows means our skin and hair benefits from the amino acids and proteins in the silk, which are almost identical to the ones found in our skin.

Skin benefits in a number of ways, it absorbs moisture from the pillow and locks it in. Its so soft its said to aid in delaying fine lines and wrinkles, especially if you sleep on your side like I do.

For hair, it benefits by being less knotty and over time it increases in shine and vitality.

The best silk pillows to use are 400 or more thread mulberry (no I dont mean that Mulberry) silk, which is a continious strand of silk and very good quality. There are many imitations and whilst using other types of silk pillows is better than not using them – the best is said to be mulberry.

In the UK there are many companies which offer good quality mulberry silk pillow cases and on average it costs £40.00 per pillow case – two I like and respect are SilkSkin and SkinSleep. Ebay also have a wide range of “silk” pillows available for a low price but the quality can be questionable and I think its better to go with a company like Sleepsilk.

I have now been using a silk pillow case for around 6 months. Whilst I can’t comment on the impact on my skin too much, I do feel that my face is softer since using it and more “plump” in the morning (cheesy, I know!), I hope the results will show themselves in the long run and I am delaying fine lines and wrinkles.

The impact on my hair has been great though, from the first night! My hair is curly and prone to be frizzy and I have noticed that the pillow has reduced the frizz as well as made my hair more shiny. Its less tangled in the mornings and so I lose less hair when brushing it.

I cannot recommend getting a silk pillow enough, if you think it costs a lot then think about all the products you will buy in the next 30 years or so to help prevent aging and then compare the cost of that to one or two pillows?!

If anyone has currently owns silk pillows let me know, I would love to know what you think and how your skin/hair has benefitted from them.

Thanks for reading!

  • I’ve been wanting to get a silk pillow for a while actually but the price is always off putting, are they easy to wash out of interest?

  • Its a little bit of pain in the sense that its best to hand wash them or maybe use the delicate cycle on the washing machine but they do dry quite quickly.

I think its a good idea to get on though! Let me know if you do end up getting one :-) xx
