Wild About Beauty – Mattifying Balm & Botanical Skin Prep Serum

Wild About Beauty Botanical Skin Prep Serum

Wild About Beauty is a new brand, launched about 3 weeks ago its the brain child of Louise Redknapp and Kim Jacob (an International Makeup Artist). The philosophy behind the brand is to use botanical ingredients to correct, balance and improve the appearance of the skin.

Some of the natural ingredients used in the product include argan oil (one of my faves!), beeswax, aloe vera, rose water (another fave!), sea whip marine extract (never heard of this before), winter cherry, green caviar extract and vitamins A,C and E.

Everything in the line of makeup is free from parabens, talc and petrochemicals. It is also cruelty free.

The brand is sold online and also in some branches of Debenhams and House of Fraser. Here is a link to their site.

I am reviewing two products in the range today, one is the Mattifying Balm (which I bought) and the Botanical Skin Prep Serum (this was a PR sample).

First up is the Mattifying Balm – £20.00 for 22g

This contains Sea Whip Marine Extract.

This is what Wild About Beauty have to say about it:

“The lightweight and colourless balm will instantly mattify skin. Our multi-purpose product is ideal as a make-up primer or perfect for quick ‘on-the-go’ touch ups to prevent shine.

This versatile, miracle balm will leave the skin looking smooth and shine free whilst helping to erase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Keeping your skin looking flawless from day to night”

As I have oily skin, I am always looking for something to control oil and the dredded “chip pan” look. This is an interesting product for me, I have never used something that is a solid balm. To me it looks like vaseline or unmelted coconut oil!

The balm comes with a sponge applicator and the pot is a decent size. You can apply this before your makeup, and use it to touch up any shine over your makeup, through out the day.

I dab this on my t-zone and then apply my foundation. It applies well and doesnt feel tacky or too heavy. My foundation applied just as normal, I was worried it would go on patchy or ball up due to the balm, but that is not the case.

The effect: By lunchtime I always extremely shiny and need to powder or blot. This balm works hard to reduce my shine, and although its not full proof, it is effective. I am significantly less shiny by lunch with this balm. Thumbs up in this regard. I would say this reduced my shine by about 30-40% so its definitely working.

I have re-applied the balm during the day and it doesn’t mess up my existing make-up, which is great.

I think this is good but not a wonder product. Whilst it reduced my shine it didn’t keep me matte all day, and I am not overly oily, just moderately so. I have used this for consecutive days and not broken out from it, which is awesome.

Conclusion: I think this is worth a try if you are slightly or moderately oily but it will probably not do anything special for you if you are very oily. In terms of price its reasonable, you only need to apply a small amount and so the tub will last a long time.

I am happy – I am giving this 3.5/5.

Now on to the Botanical Skin Prep Serum* – 21.00 for 30ml

Its a well known thing that Caviar is good for the skin, and this contains just that – This is the first product I have ever used that contains it!

This is what Wild About Beauty have to say about it:

“Packed with amazing skin care ingredients, this super-serum will rejuvenate your skin, keeping it nourished and conditioned whilst simultaneously priming skin to ensure make-up goes on smoothly and really lasts.

Enhanced with anti-ageing ingredients such as Green Caviar Extract, the super-rich formulation will plump, prime and even out the skin tone whilst the Sesame Seed Oil ensures skin is kept hydrated.”

I have used primers and serums before – but never something that combines the two, so this was interesting for me! I apply this after my moisturiser as I see it as more of a primer than a serum. It doesn’t have the consistency of a standard serum or silicone based primer, this feels more creamy like a moisturiser and I love the texture. It has a light fragrance which I really like and it spreads across the skin nicely, leaving a lovely velvety texture and a lovely base for my foundation. My foundation applies smoothly and I feel I use a little less foundation than normal when using this.

I love the packaging – its very hygienic, it has a little pump, and 2 pumps are  enough for my face.

Effect: I do not see any immediate difference in my skin when I apply this, it does feel softer but it doesn’t *look* any different. However, my foundation applies smoothly once I have this on and I feel I use a little less foundation than normal when using this, which is great. In terms of prolonging the wear of my foundation, I am not sure about that to be honest, I think it lasts about the same.

Conclusion: For far this a lovely primer/serum and I am enjoying using it. I will have to report back in a month or so as to the effect (if any) if the serum on the condition of my skin. All I know now is that I love using the serum and it has not broken me out in consecutive days that I have been using it.

I am giving this a 4/5 for now.

Overall, I like these two items and I am keen to try more from the range. I hope that they will release more products and go into locations. I find the price of both of these fairly reasonable as the products are good quality and use lovely ingredients. They are not as natural as INIKA, which I think its its closest competitor on the high street, however it has to be said that INIKA is a lot more natural IMO.

I still want to try some of the make-up next, maybe a lipstick or blush, so watch this space for my reviews on them.

Thanks for reading!

P.S – this post and related posts contains a PR sample, however my reviews are always honest and my thoughts are my own :-) You can trust me on that, but you cant trust me not to steal your blusher if I like it!
