MUA Pro-Base Fixing Mist

Double click to enlarge

One of the latest products to be released from MUA is this Pro-Base Fixing Base, this is a makeup setting spray to help prolong the wear of your makeup.

This costs £4.00 for 60ml and is sold online and in Superdrug stores.

This is what MUA have to say about it:

Fixes your makeup in place all day long. Protects against heat, humidity, cold and windy conditions; whatever your day throws at you – your makeup will hold in place!

Micro-fine mist for easy application

Moisturises and hydrates the skin

Up to 8 hours fixing power

Review:

I have tried similar products to this from other brands such as the infamous MAC Fix + (which broke me out SO badly!) and the ELF Mist & Set. I like the ELF one, its good and very reasonably priced, however its not perfect.

When I saw this for only £4.00 I thought, what the hell, I will give it a shot and see how it compares to the ELF one I have been using for a few years now.

This MUA spray is a decent size, and I quite like the packaging, its not as cheap looking as some of  their other products. Importantly the nozzle sprays evenly which is always a good thing. I have had problems with the ELF one being a little uneven.

Once my makeup is done, I spray about 3 squirts of this all over my face, it dries pretty quickly, again pretty important. Once its dried I don’t feel it on my skin at all. It is not sticky or heavy at all. I wouldnt quite agree that the spray is “micro-fine” – that is a little stretch too far, in my opinion!

I think its true that it moistures and hydrates the skin, as the weather has been so cold my skin is less oily than normal and a little dehydrated and this spray has helped.

In terms of “fixing” my makeup it does a decent job, I have moderately oily skin, meaning foundation and blush can fade on me and this is less than ideal. This MUA spray helps to keep my makeup in place for a few extra hours – I probably get about 20-25% more wear from my foundation and blush from using this.

I think you would benefit most of this on a night out rather than for every day wear. Its best used when you need a little “oomph” to your makeup. You could also consider using it in the summer as a refresher spray perhaps?

Whilst testing this out over a week, I used it every other day. I seem to have got whiteheads on the days I used this – nothing horrendous and its impossible  to say if it was definitely from this but on the days I didn’t use this I had no spots and my skin has been good recently. Proceed with caution if you are acne prone. FYI – MAC Fix + broke me out very badly so these may share similar ingredients. The ELF one has never broken me out.

Comparing it to the ELF one (£3.75 for 6oml), I think they both perform pretty much the same for me. The ELF one contains vitamins A, C & E and green tea, which this one doesnt. Its a hassle ordering from ELF and waiting for delivery where as with this you can just pick it up from Superdrug. Finally – this MUA one smells better than the ELF spray, there is something I really dislike about the scent of that for some reason!

Overall, I do like it – its not life changing but if you have a problem with your makeup not going the extra mile then this could be £4 really well spent. On the other hand if it doesn’t work you, then its not too much of a waste – and is worth buying before the pricier MAC Fix +

Have you tried this or other makeup setting sprays from other brands? Would you consider buying this? Drop me a line and let me know!

  • This spray looks really good. I was tempted to get the one from Urban Decay, which I have also heard good things about, but wanted something a bit more purse friendly. MUA do seem to make some good quality products for a fraction of the price that big brands do. x

  • I want to try this as I mainly use the Urban Decay All Nighter but with a baby on the way I think the purse strings will need to be tightened a little bit! The fact that you got whiteheads every other day is a bit off putting though, maybe it’s to do with one of the ingredients in the product? I’ll let you know if I do decide to pick one of these up anyway :)

  • Hi – I compared the Elf, MUA and Collection drugstore setting sprays and MUA came out slightly above Elf for me too!

    http://www.vixofalltrades.com/2013/04/battle-of-drugstore-makeup-setting.html

The biggest disappointment was the Collection one… £5 or £6 for a tiny 18ml!!
